Old Monk Cocktail? The brand, most, if not all Indians are aware of. It has nothing to do with the cocktail monk or any monk from the monastery 😉 . But coming to think of it, it does belong to the spirit world. Making it sound better, it comes from the world of spirit. And if somehow managed to stay away from the world of spirit and have not heard of it? Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to one of India’s favorite dark rum, the “Old Monk”. And like always, let’s make a simple and easy old monk cocktail
The domain Cocktailmonk.com or cocktailmonk.in has nothing to do with the rum Old monk. It’s just a pleasant coincidence. The rum enjoys a cult status in India. Today we would not be digging into the history or the legend behind the rum of the old monk, we shall leave that for some other time. So what’s new? Let’s make an old monk cocktail instead.

Being associated only with India, Old Monk is largely preferred to be had with cola. During the era when cola or Pepsi were not available, Thums Up was the only best option. The match was as good as it could get. Just like Jack and cola, Thums Up and Old Monk were a match made in heaven. If you happen to be reading this and I managed to bring back some memories? You must have guessed the generation I come from.
Maybe this could be the reason there weren’t any old monk cocktails. Coming back to the present scenario, things have drastically changed. With the cocktail industry booming, how could Old Monk be left behind? Here is one dark rum and coffee cocktail, or even say an old monk cocktail with coffee.
This is no classic cocktail. One of many cocktails crafted by 🙂 and yet to have a name. I’ll just leave the naming ceremony to you guys/ gals out there. Like always, the intention is to keep it simple. Simple and easy cocktail which could be made by all. But make sure they are above the legal drinking age. And if you favor coffee and love Old Monk as well, you should not miss this Old Monk cocktail
Cocktail ingredients
- Old Monk Dark Rum
- Instant coffee
- Sugar syrup
- Fresh Cream
- Ice
Equipment
- Cocktail Shaker
- Bar spoon
- Measuring Jigger
- Old fashioned Glass
How to make an old monk cocktail with coffee
- Add about 2 bar spoons of instant coffee powder to a shaker
- Add about 15 ml of sugar syrup to the coffee and stir the concoction
- Add 45 ml Fresh cream to the concoction and fill it with ice
- Add 50 ml Old monk rum, close the shaker, and shake well
- Open and pour into an old fashioned glass
This is one refreshing cocktail. Coffee can do that to most cocktails. The sweet coffee flavour followed by a short note from the rum, could wake you up. But an excess of it could also put you to sleep 🙂 . Can’t call it great but it’s a nice soothing cocktail. it’s easy, fast and simple cocktail.
