Old fashioned cocktail
Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail made with bourbon whiskey. When talking about bourbon whiskey cocktails, the Old Fashioned ranks right at the top of the list. For a whiskey cocktail, this one’s quite familiar with most whiskey drinkers. Though I sometimes do replace the bourbon with a Scotch, as I hold more whiskey in my armoury than any other whiskey 🙂 . Well, it does make a slight difference in taste, but it’s one of the best ways to drink whiskey in a cocktail. Adding to the taste, the ease of making it is also a factor. Scotch, Bourbon or any other whiskey–whisky would pair brilliantly in the Old Fashioned way.
With just 3 ingredients in it, the cocktail does manage to deliver a punch. It’s here where the Angostura bitters justify its existence- just kidding. When it comes to bitters, Angostura is in a league of its own. And for the Old Fashioned cocktail, Angostura is the real hero. I did try making an Old Fashioned with some non-alcoholic bitter, but none could come close to the flavours of Angostura. It’s definitely a class apart. You could go ahead and replace the bourbon with a whiskey of your choice, but I would recommend sticking with the Angostura bitters.
old fashioned cocktail with Indian whiskey
The whiskey or whiskey when replaced, understandably makes a difference. The flavors of the bourbon whisky truly justify the cocktail, but there is no crime in switching it for with your favourite whish(e)y. I did go ahead and swap from bourbon to an Indian whiskey just to introduce the cocktail to the regional consumer. The cocktail did hold up well without losing its charm. Though there was a noticeable difference, the cocktail still had a touch of elegance. As I mentioned above, it’s the Angostura bitter that matters most.
To make an Old Fashioned, you don’t have to have any expertise in bartending. It’s just so simple and fast to make. Most bartenders would never agree and would still recommend that bartending knowledge is a must. And yes, bartending knowledge is always an asset. No harm in promoting the profession here 🙂 . A cocktail introduced in the 1800s, still running strong. In a recent global poll conducted in 100 bars by Drinks International, the Old Fashioned was announced as the top-selling classic cocktail internationally for 6 straight years. This would mean the best place to have it is at the bar. And support your local bartenders. lol
