indian whiskey sour?
What is an Indian whiskey sour? The same thought kept running through my head. All this year that I have been making cocktails, I must have made hundreds of whiskey sours. And not all of them were made with Bourbon whiskey 😉 . The official recipe states Bourbon Whiskey as a part of the of the ingredients for the whiskey sour. Now if we replace the whisky with scotch? They call it a Scotch sour. And what happens when it’s replaced by an Indian whiskey? Well, we still call it a whiskey sour. But for now (today), let’s just call it an “ Indian Whiskey Sour “
The awareness of the Indian drinking consumer has seen a vast improvement toward whiskey, who are now quite aware of the difference between good and very quality of whiskey 🙂 . This has led to an array of premium malt whiskey productions in India. And many of them have gone ahead to win prestigious whiskey awards in global whiskey competitions. Cutting it short, the Indian whiskey is now of international award-winning standards. It’s quite a common practice to switch the bourbon fro any available whiskey. Nevertheless, we still end up calling it a whiskey sour.

the ___ sour
There is a considerable difference when it comes to taste on replacing the Bourbon with an Indian whiskey; for the whiskey sour, it makes it a whole new cocktail altogether. The same applies when we switch from Bourbon to Scotch Whisky. Well, we then call it the “Scotch Sour” instead of. “Whiskey Sour, and that’s how I ended up calling it an ‘Indian Whiskey Sour”, Bourbon, being a corn whiskey, comes with its distinct flavour. We can’t say the same about the scotch and the premium indian whisky, since they both come from grain. Long story short – Bourbon whiskey are made from a minimum of 51 percent corn, while the scotch and Indian premium whiskey are made from grains.
We often love making complex things or making things complex
The whole idea of the Indian sour cocktail was to create regional awareness on how to use a good indian whiskey in a whiskey cocktail, especially a sour. But since the lead character of the cocktail has been replaced, it wouldn’t be fair to call it a whiskey sour. The taste, the texture, everything changes once you replace the Bourbon with another. whiskey. The original recipe of the whiskey sour should always have the Bourbon whiskey as its lead character. And once you switch the lead character, ethically, the name changes. Thank god there is no copyright here 🙂
